Holistic Solution for seasonal allergies, sinus pain and pressure: Craniosacral Therapy can help!

holistic solution to allergies and sinus pain

The extreme fluctuating temperatures and pressure that occur during the change of seasons along with seasonal allergies can cause many people to suffer from the effects of increased sinus pain and pressure, more commonly known as Sinusitis. According to the American Rhinologic Society (RNS), more than 30 million people are diagnosed with sinusitis each year. Chronic sinusitis effects about 15% of the US population, making it one of the most common chronic illnesses in America.

Sinusitis is commonly treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics, over-the-counter medication and even supplements often only provide temporary relief of symptoms without addressing the root cause. To prevent this cycle of reoccurrence and chronic inflammation, manual therapies such as Craniosacral therapy and lymphatic drainage have proved therapeutically successful.

The sinuses have small openings that allow mucus to drain into the nasal passages. The purpose of this mucus is to flush out toxins such as virus, bacteria, fungi, and allergens. Structural blockages due to misaligned cranial bones can affect the size of these openings and inhibit optimal drainage of the mucus into the nasal passages. This causes mucus to build up further blocking the openings in the sinuses creating a breeding ground for bacteria and other pathogens.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a holistic solution for seasonal allergies, sinus pain and pressure. CST has the potential to provide immediate relief of sinus pain and pressure by addressing the structural blockages that can cause your symptoms.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) treatment focuses on mobilizing and releasing restrictions of the cranial bones which can optimize the opening of the sinuses that have been blocked by mucus, bacteria/viruses and allow for optimal drainage. It is not uncommon for a client to have increased drainage during and after a session as we create space and open up these blockages that are keeping the sinuses chronically inflamed and irritated.

Causes of structural blockages:

  • Trauma or blow to head, face or jaw

  • TMJ dysfunction

  • Whiplash

  • Forward head posture

  • Birth trauma

  • Fascial restrictions in neck, chest and head

  • Tongue tie and narrow palate

The above are all possible reasons the openings in the sinuses may be altered. CST addresses these changes by working on the bones in your skull, re-aligning them to their optimal position and therefore removing any obstruction to the drainage of your sinuses.

Fascial restrictions in structures surrounding your chest, neck, and head can also create an environment where circulation is not optimal. CST and lymphatic work can release thoscial restrictions improving circulation and removal of waste products (lymph) which in turn decreases inflammation causing the sinusitis.

If you are struggling with increased sinus pressure and all of the symptoms that can accompany it, CST may be the answer you have been looking for! I have had tremendous success in treating these issues with craniosacral and lymphatic therapy to help the body release the mucus build-up in a gentle and efficient way, opening up the sinuses and allowing drainage to occur, the effects are almost immediate.

“Following my first craniosacral session, my sinuses have never been this clear!”

– Erin C.

Craniosacral Therapy can definitely help with sinus pressure/pain associated with sinusitis or seasonal allergies, but more importantly it will move your entire body toward a state of homeostasis where healing and repair are optimal. This means that your body will be able to fight off future physical and mental stressors with increased success resulting in decreased down time and trips to the doctor.
